Best Late Night Food (bc we all do it)
Even though many hate to admit, we late night and we late night often. After a night out, a slice from down the street sounds like the best thing in the world, a decision you will either regret or appreciate the next morning. Luckily, many downtown Athens restaurants leave their doors open a little bit longer than custom to feed the bubbly and buzzed crowd as they make their way out of the bars onto the booths.
The Grill
It would be an absolute shame to visit Athens and not make a "Grill" late night memory, because almost every student has one. This downtown cornerstone is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week and caters to every midnight diner's need. The kitschy, retro vibe is the perfect atmosphere to chat with other friends who ended up at the same place as you after multiple bar hops and won't kill your bank account either. The menu ranges but every veteran agrees, you have to try their staple Feta Fries. It just tastes like freshman year!
Little Italy Pizzeria
Little Italy is a close second to most beloved late night dinning in Athens because who can turn down pizza? The line forms down the street for this quick, efficient and tasty grub serving up everything from custom pizza's by the slice to the classic cheese and pepperoni. The line moves fast, which is great when you are starving and exhausted from a long night of party partaking.
The World Famous
Artsy locals spot, The World Famous is just that, famously good. Both a bar and restaurant and an intimate space for live music, the menu is jam packed with bold flavors and continually changing. This dynamic restaurant is a mod podge of the best Athens has to offer, and stays open till 2am. Word on the street is the chicken and waffles are the best thing, but I think it is safe to say whatever menu item you fancy, you can't go wrong. Also important to note here, the crowd at World Famous is a full service restaurant and might not be completely tolerant of belligerent diners, so checking out this restaurant on a calmer night is suggested or else the hipsters will for sure make fun of you.
Insomnia Cookies
Can't sleep? Insomnia Cookies has got your back, whether your sweet tooth is acting up or every other late night restaurant is packed, these cookies are a staple of many college towns. Create your own ice cream cookie sandwich, with a variety of ice cream and cookie flavors to combine, mix and choose from. Although Insomnia is a chain, small store front in the middle of downtown gives it a native feel. The best part? These guys will deliver to your door step until three am AND you can track your order with the "cookie tracker" featured on their website.
Highwire Lounge
The originator of the "silent disco" on Saturdays, the Highwire Lounge is the bar arm of well-established restaurant, Trapeze. Get it? High wire, Trapeze? Quite the clever play on words as well as the menu, the restaurant also serves items off their menu in the mid-modern styled lounge. A perfect destination for a night cap, girls come in large groups and post up in a the booths lining up the entry way, and if I have to guess, probably order the pimento cheese or garlic aioli fries, both of which are to die for. The recently updated and extended cocktail menu will satisfy even the most fickle of taste buds and--you guessed it--they are open late!
Chick-fil-A Foodtruck
When news about this food truck made it to the college kids, people were stoked to say the least. Many people have an emotional connection with this southern establishment, now think about that love after a couple drinks--unreal. If you tell a drunk girl a Chick-fil-A sandwich is right around the corner, you've probably just made her entire night. Follow the Beechwood Chick-fil-A Instagram and find if and when this beloved food truck will be out and about, selling sandwiches, fries and nuggets and of course providing all the sauces. Best late night meal ever.
